Removing the TSM Client Software from a Windows Server

1. Why remove TSM?

There are several reasons why you may need or wish to remove the TSM software from your machine, such as:
  • You are leaving the university - the software is licensed and configured specifically for use within Oxford University only.
  • You are having problems with TSM and so have been asked to remove and reinstall TSM.
  • You are upgrading to a new machine and no longer wish to back up the old one.
  • You no longer need to back a machine up.
We have compiled some automated scripts to assist you with the process of removing TSM. If your preference is to perform these tasks manually then please see the manual removal section.

2. Semi-automated removal of the TSM client software

2.1. Uninstalling the software

  1. In the bottom-left corner of your screen, click on Start.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Click on Add/Remove Programs or on Uninstall a program (Windows 7 or higher versions).
  4. Locate IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client and click on Remove.
  5. A prompt will appear asking if you are sure; click Yes to begin removing the TSM software.
  6. A progress bar will be displayed whilst the software is removed.
  7. If prompted to close the TSM Client scheduler or other TSM services, click OK to continue.
  8. Please note: no confirmation is given that the software has been removed, but you will be returned to the Add/Remove Programs screen when the uninstallation process is complete. Then you will be able to see that IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client is no longer listed.

2.2. Removing the final components

Important: if you are likely to be reinstalling the TSM software and have previously set up custom INCLUDE/EXCLUDE rules then please copy the file dsm.opt from C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient to an alternative location, such as your desktop, in order to preserve it.
  1. Click on the following link: remove final TSM components.
    • If you have the option to Run, then do so; otherwise Download/Save the file and run the exe file locally.
    • When prompted click on Unzip.
    • You will be advised that "1 file(s) unzipped successfully"; click OK.
    • The script will now run automatically: follow the on-screen prompts
  2. This script does the following:
    • Stops and removes all TSM services.
    • Deletes the C:\Program Files\Tivoli folder left behind after the removal of the software.
    • Deletes the c:\tsm_images folder left behind after the initial installation of the TSM software.
    • Attempts to delete any TSM installation files left on the current user's desktop.
    • Removes the remaining TSM entries from the registry.
  3. You will receive confirmation that all TSM components have now been removed.
  4. Click OK.
You should now have successfully removed all components of the TSM client software from your machine.
